Privacy Policy
1. Who we are
This policy explains how the operator of "Bite" (readthewater.net) ("we", "us") handles your personal data when you use the Bite app and website. For data protection law we are the data controller. Contact: mattpfarmer@gmail.com.
2. The data we collect
Account data: your name and the email address you sign up with, and your saved preferences (fishing types, approaches, baits, home swim). Location data: your device location, or a town/country you enter, used to find nearby spots, shops, conditions and species — collected only when you use a feature that needs it. Content you provide: photos you upload for AI identification, catch logs, voice input you dictate, and corrections you submit. Usage and technical data: basic information about how you use the app and the device/browser you use, for reliability and improvement. Consent records: whether and when you accepted these terms and any marketing preferences.
3. How and why we use it
To provide the Service (find spots and shops, generate forecasts and AI reads, identify catches, keep your history); to keep your account secure and the app working; to improve our features and AI quality; and — only with your separate, optional consent — to show you relevant local offers. We do not sell your personal data.
4. Legal bases (UK/EU GDPR)
We rely on: performance of our contract with you (to run the Service you signed up for); your consent (for optional personalised offers and device location, which you can withdraw any time); and our legitimate interests (to keep the app secure and improve it), balanced against your rights.
5. Who we share data with
We use trusted third parties that process data on our behalf to run the app, for example: Supabase (account database, file storage and authentication); Anthropic (AI processing of your photos and questions); Google (maps and place data); and Open-Meteo and OpenStreetMap (weather, tide and map data). These providers act under contract and only for the purposes we set. Some may process data outside the UK/EU; where they do, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses. Our main providers are Supabase (account database, authentication and file storage), Anthropic (AI processing), Google (maps and place data), Open-Meteo and OpenStreetMap (weather, tide and map data), Resend (email) and Vercel (app hosting). Each operates under its own privacy policy.
6. AI processing
When you use Swim ID, Catch ID, Tackle/Bait ID or the Ghillie assistant, the photo or text you submit is sent to our AI provider to generate a response. Our AI provider is Anthropic. Anthropic does not use inputs submitted through its API to train its models, and retains them only for a limited period to monitor for misuse before deleting them.
7. How long we keep it
We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, your profile, catches and uploaded photos are deleted immediately, and within 30 days from encrypted backups, except where we must keep limited records to meet legal obligations.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or export your data, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent at any time. You can edit your profile and delete your account in the app, or contact us at mattpfarmer@gmail.com to exercise any right. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection regulator.
9. Children
Bite is not intended for children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children below that age.
10. Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data (for example encrypted connections, access controls and private storage for photos). No system is completely secure, but we work to protect your information.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy; the "last updated" date above shows the current version, and we will tell you about material changes where appropriate.
12. Contact
